In art educator Phil Metzger’s book, The Art of Perspective, he offers this wonderful technique for using a top view to figure out a side view of an object. 

Here he’s figured out the placement of widows on a cylindrical tower from a top-view. Then he’s traced those locations to create a side view in perspective.
